Spec Racer rules update
Last season was a good one for the Spec Racer class, and 2010 is looking just as promising. With the lessons we learned, there will be changes in the carb, header, and a new fuel tank option.
Header:
Last season we broke a lot of headers, and they were expensive. This season will see a new header. The new one is MUCH better steel and is a proven piece in the Clone racing arena. We will also be using the RLV muffler that is a staple of 4 cycle racing around the country. Having a two piece exhaust (header and muffler), also allows lower replacement costs to crash damage - you only replace the part that is broke.
Carburetor:
Carbs were okay, but we couldn't get extra jets for them regardless of where we looked. This season we will go to the stock carb with a new linkage for the throttle cable. Clone classes across the country use this carb, and they work well.
While the carb throat is slightly smaller, I don't expect this to make a difference in performance. The old carb is likely much larger than is needed, as clone racers typically jet the stock carb the same as we jet our old carb. If the bigger carb we were running made more HP, it would need a bigger jet as well. Since they are virtually the same jets, HP should be virtually the same too. Speaking to engine builders confirms this.
Carb & header cost:
If my testing isn't snowed out, I will have these pieces available in the next 7-10 days. While there is over $100 of parts used, we should keep the cost under $70 for racers that bought karts from me. All new karts will come with the correct pieces.
Fuel system:
Last year the stock fuel tank was mandatory. I thought this would keep the cost of racing down, and help the perception of equality. Through the season we learned that the stock tanks don't always hold up to the number of laps we give them, so I am going to allow center mounted fuel tanks with a pulse driven fuel pump. Maintaining the pumps will be less hassle and less money than repairing and replacing stock tanks. Peformance will not change with either tank style.
These are the changes that are going to happen. If you have any input on the class, drop us an email.

why we do not change to a better Carb. may be a mikuni
Why we do not change to a better Carb. may be a Mikuni, that original carb came with the go kart , now we have to pay for the part the we did not get , doesn't look too fair.
carb
Mikuni makes about 90 carbs. They are not cheap and 99% are too large to feed the Lifan motor. A cheap carb that everyone needs to run wil work.

You guys are not paying for
You guys are not paying for the carb.
Header $25
Muffler $50
Throttle linkage $9
Filter cup $11
SUBTOTAL $95
tax $ 6.18
TOTAL $101.18 without the cost of the carb.
I'm working with RLV on the header now. Should be able to sell to you guys right around $65 for the whole kit.
And, this is all better pieces than we ran last season. This is the same as the whole country is running with clone classes.

Changes
If I could have updated my car or motorcycle for $100 bucks a year during years of racing the compound interest would make me a kabilizionarre. This racing is the cheapest and best around. Throw down the benny and see ya on the grid. Where else in racing can you or I have so much fun for this kind of bucks?? As long as as we are running nearly equal cars and that this is the best deal around. My bucks included.
