Qualifying - Points Race #12
Wow, we opened up discussions on qualifying, and the comments have been flying. That’s cool, and we’re excited to hear what you are all thinking. Thanks. There is certainly enough interest to warrant trying the format, and then we’ll all be able to weigh in and decide more accurately what we’d like to do. So…we will be qualifying on Points Race 12 – August 28th. Mark your calendars, call your friends – lets’ make this a big one! Below I've outlined the format we’ll use the 28th. This is the same format that Route 66 uses, and seems as good as any to begin with. After Race #12 we want to hear your thoughts to determine the direction we go for the remainder of this season, and into next year.
RACE #12 Format:
Qualify: 3 Laps
Pre-final: 6 laps
Final: 12 laps
- Qualifying results set Pre-final start. Pre-final finish sets Final start. No inversion of grids.
- Season Points will be awarded to qualifying as if it were a heat race.

Qualifying
Seeing that I had my best finish to date last weekend, I am in favor of the qualifying setup. Big props to my crew chief for getting my kart dialed in also.
Why not use the 3rd practice
Why not use the 3rd practice run as the qualifier? You're taking away a 6 lap heat in favor for a 3 lap qualifier? Is this the plan across the board for all classes? What about Jr's and Kid Karts? I actually had time and watched the Kid Karts the last 2 sessions and found it exciting, and I found out you have 2 girls running in that class!!!! I would hate to see that class touched because if anyone witnessed those races, they were fun to watch. The better drivers did end up winning the races and it looked like they sorted out pretty well in the end. I think it helps them because they'll be moving up in classes anywhere from 1-3 years and looks like passing & patients is being taught well in that class. Kudos to the parents, they look like they get along as a bunch. Wish it was the same in can :)
Anyway, I'm not in favor across the board for dropping a 6 lap heat race, let alone scoring a 3 lap qualifier in the points. If you run the qual during the 3rd practice, you're day will still come out about the same, not adding to the time spent at the track for everyone.
qualifying
To start with, we are going to try out qualifying just the way the regionals do it. After this weekend we'll be looking for more input on how to go for the 2011 season.
Thanks for your ideas. We're listening.

Qual was good, but I do like
Qual was good, but I do like the idea of using your 3rd practice as the qual and leaving the 2 heats and feature. You don't have to do it like everyone else, maybe regionals my copy you if done as stated above :) Maybe a 10 min break before you start the 3rd practice? Best of 4 laps, or maybe the average of 3 laps to figure the grid? You can take the times from the first 2 practices to see who is the fastest and have them qual first so they don't run up on a slower kart during qual. That's a good way to get as many karts on the track and still be safe and keep things moving.
Alot of people seem to think
Alot of people seem to think that chopping people off or driving off line is racing, well whats the matter with being on the grid with people that turned roughly the same lap?The biggest problem with qualifying is that the people who have been living in denial will have to work to start at the front sorry if your tires are crap your engine needs a rebuild you are unable to get motivated without others to chase whatever your excuse. The p-pick system is like welfare for the uncapable quit crying and figure out what it takes to go faster. The qualifying format is the best as far as safety is concered as well.
Qualifying
This would be the best change that the track has made in a long time! The racing is just as good and if you want to race with the big boys in the front then you will have to make changes to your personal race program. By drawing your position it mixes the fast guys and the slow guys, so you think that you are watching a good race when someone is coming from the back to chase down the fast guy that had a good draw position. When really you are watching a frustrated driver! By qualifying you will have racing throughout the whole group because everyone around you is going your speed. (weather it is at the front or the back) I had alot of conversations over the years with racers that have left the track because of this. I have raced at this track when it was both ways and I can tell you that the qualifying format went alot better! If passing cars is something that an individual driver wants to work on then he or she should opt. to start in the back of the pre-final and the final so he can work on the slower traffic.
I do not support changing the
I do not support changing the format. I'm new to the sport and feel the existing format will help me become a better driver/racer.
For the club races I don't
For the club races I don't like the qualifying method.
Starting in back of someone that may be slower than you, teaches you how to pass.
I think having the qualifying will just make both the Heat race and the feature single file racing, and not much fun.
Say NO to qualifying
I'm against qualifying for the club races at Norway - We are out here to RACE - not just run around for lap times - Now we'll lose a race experience and just run two?? I'll give it a chance on the weekend - But my first reaction is Nope.. I'm not a fan of the format for Rt66 but I understand those are series events. A whole lot of effort (and money) for just 2 races....
How about a track policy to put "new" drivers at the back of the grid for 2-3 weeks
